Our curriculum
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the nationally agreed curriculum for all children in England from birth to aged 5 years which you will find implemented in all early years settings.
The EYFS has 4 guiding principles
Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be capable, confident and self-assured.
Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.
Children learn and develop well in enabling environments in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers.
Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates. The framework covers all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

How do young children learn?
At Portman we know that young children learn best from being given opportunities to explore and investigate at their own pace, to control their learning through their choice of activity.
At Portman we know that children are natural learners from birth needing to:
- Think, talk and tell stories
- Communicate with skill and passion
- Run, climb, shout, hide and laugh
- Learn from and with each other
- Love and respect themselves and each other
- Be curious, creative and playful explorers, relishing discovery
Learning at home
What babies and young children learn with their families at home is very important and has a big impact on making sure that children reach their full potential. We will encourage parents and carers to work with us in partnership and we will help them to understand how important what happens at home really is. We will show them the simple ways they can have the most impact on their baby or young child’s learning by;
- Just talking, using a wide vocabulary
- Using lots of praise and reducing negative commands
- Telling children about the world
- Giving children choices, encouraging children’s views
- By listening
- Sharing books at home
- Singing songs at home
- Playing together at home
- Arranging for them to be able to play with their friends
